Winter 2025 Session
Water Sustainability & Coastal Biodiversity
Wednesday, January 29, 2025 from 8:30am — 9:30am
This session will be hosted by Patrick Belmonte, Co-Founder and CSO of Change is Simple, with Special Guest David Kimbro from Northeastern University.
About David
David is an Associate Professor at Northeastern University with a research lab at Northeastern’s Marine Science Center in Nahant. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses, he uses a variety of research approaches to study why coastal habitats, such as salt marshes and oyster reefs, thrive in certain areas, but not in others and tests the general ecological theory. Because these habitats enhance biodiversity, support commercial fisheries, buffer coastal erosion, and improve water quality, his research is important for maintaining key ecosystem services that benefit society.
David is excited to share how this kind of research has previously been used to inform litigation before the US Supreme Court about water sustainability. There will also be discussions on new, local research on aquaculture in Massachusetts and the impacts of historical ditching to the biodiversity of salt marshes.
